If you’re anything like me, you struggle with “getting your water in” each day. You KNOWW it’s important to be fully hydrated, but it seems like a chore to constantly be chugging plain ole’ agua. Today I have pulled together some helpful tips and tricks to keep you hydrated without feeling drained.
How much is enough?
This is a question we have all asked! We all know the “8 glass” rule, but is that actually enough for all of us? The amount of water we each need depends on a few things: Gender (men need more!), activity level, the amount of sweat you excrete, and the environment you live in. The Mayo Clinic reports this recommendation:
- About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men
- About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women
This seems like a lot more than I typically drink… but don’t worry! We get 20% of our water intake through food! Fruits and vegetables definitely contain lots of water and contribute to our water intake as well as other beverages. One way you will be able to tell if you are fully hydrated is your urine will be clear and you will not feel thirsty.
What are the benefits?
Staying fully hydrated certainly has loads of health benefits. It aids digestion, promotes mental clarity, keeps all the cells in your body firing on all cylinders so you will just “feel better”. Your body will be able to flush out wastes more readily, and your temperature will remain at a regulated level. Water also helps lubricate and protect your joints, and can improve athletic performance. Your skin will also clear up because your body isn’t holding onto toxins that can cause breakouts.
What are the costs?
If you decide to start drinking more water, you will naturally have to pay a few more visits to the loo… but, I’m sure that trade off will be well worth it!
